Cotton is another common material that is actually machine-washable and durable. Common MaterialsĪcrylic may be the most common fabric used to make beanies. For a truly snug fit, pull the beanie down in the back and tuck excess material into the cuff. Larger beanies, especially styles with pom poms, can be worn higher on the head for a more casual look. Some wear them so that they only cover the upper half of the ears. How should a beanie fit?īeanies should fit so that they don't slide down over your eyes, but how you choose to wear it on your head is up to you. ![]() While different types offer different benefits (like the extra ear protection of a trapper hat or the timeless style of a cable knit hat), a great all-around women's beanie should be lightweight, easy to pack, keep your head and ears warm, and be effortless. And if your outerwear includes a lot of black (□♀️guilty), try changing it up a bit with a pop of color or a bright pattern. When it comes to women's headwear for cold weather, nothing combines style and function quite like a beanie. When choosing a color or pattern, Berlin says to pick a color that pops up in your most-used coats. “When winter is done, just wash or dry clean and fold it up to store easily for the next season.” “Because of the simple design, a beanie can work with most styles of outwear from dressier wool coats to sporty puffers,” she adds. ![]() But the bright side is that beanies can go with nearly everything. When browsing, you’ll find that the cuffed beanie is a hot style this year, as well as beanies with a ribbed look, Berlin says. And if it’s too long, you can roll it up just a little bit more. “The soft knit will mold to your head making it easy to fit many different head shapes/sizes,” Berlin says. One of the best features about beanies is that they’re inherently adjustable without needing straps, buttons, or other adornments. If you don’t live in extreme cold or want something for the fall and spring, a cotton or crocheted beanie will provide you with enough to keep you warm without overheating. “Fleece will really help keep your head warm and therefore help retain body heat,” she adds. But there are also ones that are fleece-lined and provide enough insulation to keep you toasty. (Honestly, that’s worse than hat hair.) “Avoid anything that feels itchy the moment you put it on because that won't go away,” she adds.Ī good winter beanie is made of wool or cashmere because they offer the most warmth, Berlin notes. ![]() But if it’s too snug, it may leave an indentation in your forehead, so be aware of that, too. Make sure it has a snug fit to provide ample warmth. You might find cashmere ones are more expensive, so you may want to opt for a soft wool knit or cotton if you’re allergic.īerlin recommends trying the hat on before you snip the tags. The softest beanies are made from cashmere, Berlin says. When it comes to choosing which beanie will work best for you, it’s important to keep in mind some key specifications: Plus, grooves in the front sole allow for full range of motion and a full range of workouts-comfort, warmth, adjustability, and style. The afflicted sat in a circle around the baquet, hands linked, receiving a healing dose of Mesmer vibes. The room was richly appointed and dimly lit, the air filled with incense and weird melodies from an instrument called a glass harmonica. Iron rods protruded from the top, which patients would press to the ailing parts of their bodies.ĭescriptions of the scene in the baquet salon are pretty strange. The apparatus consisted of a large wooden tub filled with iron filings, glass bottles, and water, magnetized by Mesmer himself. Fortunately, the resourceful doctor harnessed his supposed ability to transfer animal magnetism to inanimate objects and built a helpful contraption, which he called the baquet. Before long, Mesmer was inundated with as many as 200 clients a day, making it difficult to treat them individually. The Vienna scandal didn’t seem to damage his credibility much, and there were plenty of rich, ailing, bored aristocrats in need of his services. Paris initially proved fertile ground for him. When word got out that Mesmer had not cured her as he had claimed (there were also some reports of inappropriate touching), a scandal erupted, and Mesmer fled to Paris in 1778. According to some accounts, Paradis was able to see when Mesmer was in the room, but went blind again when he left. His treatment of patients using mesmeric techniques brought great success for a time, but his failed attempt to cure famous blind piano prodigy Maria Theresia von Paradis around 1777 eventually brought trouble. He entertained socialites-Mozart and Joseph Haydn among them-at his manse, where he also set up a medical practice. Mesmer married wealthy widow Maria Anna von Posch in 1768, cementing his place in elite society and entering a period of high times in Vienna. ![]() But he eventually abandoned the magnets after deciding that an individual with particularly strong magnetism (such as himself, of course) could achieve the same effect by laying hands on or passing his hands over a patient’s body. Taking a page from Hell, Mesmer began working with patients by using magnets to move their fluid around and restore their health. Health was a result of the magnetic fluid being in balance, while illness was the result of blockages. His theory held that all living beings have a magnetic fluid (akin to electricity-it was not unusual to speak of energy as “fluid” in Mesmer’s time) running through their bodies, and that this fluid could be transferred between bodies and even to inanimate objects. While that may sound like some sort of sexy super power, Mesmer’s meaning was a bit more literal. But it was not until several years later, when he encountered Jesuit astronomer Maximilian Hell (yes, his real name) and his treatment of patients using magnets to produce artificial “tides” in the body that Mesmer began referring to animal magnetism. Influenced by Isaac Newton’s ideas about the role of heavenly bodies on ocean tides, in 1766 he published a doctoral thesis titled De planetarum influxu in corpus humanum ( On the Influence of the Planets on the Human Body). After a childhood studying in a monastery and Jesuit schools, he enrolled at the University of Vienna, where he studied law and then medicine, graduating with honors. Mesmer was born in 1734 in Iznang, Germany to a forest warden and a locksmith’s daughter. He is also part of the select group of people in history to have an entire verb- mesmerize-named for him. His theories were debunked in his time and sound bizarre today, but some credit him with laying the foundation for the practice of modern hypnotism. ![]() ![]() Mesmer was an 18th century doctor who developed the theory of animal magnetism (more about that later), as well as a related style of treatment that came to be known as mesmerism. Is this man a hypnotist or a movie villain? A healer or a charlatan? In the case of Franz Anton Mesmer, the answer to all of the above could be yes. He stares fixedly into the patient’s eyes, stroking her limbs, and then passing his hands in front of her body in a series of cryptic motions. A tall, striking doctor with an unusually piercing gaze sits opposite his patient, firmly pressing her knees between his own. ![]() The final step is to add caramel drizzle on top of the drink in Starbucks signature crosshatch pattern-7 across one way, 7 across the other way, and 2 circles. The best evidence is that the bird was “simply” slaughtered into oblivion. More plausible theories included disease, which although not impossible is without any evidence at all, as large numbers of dead birds were never found (unlike caves today filled with dead bats, the victims of white-nose syndrome). Some, like Henry Ford, accepted their extinction but thought the birds had drowned in the Pacific Ocean as they fled to freedom. There were the deniers who claimed the hordes of pigeons all moved to South America where they changed their appearance to elude their pursuers. The 1871 nesting of passenger pigeons in Wisconsin likely involved 136 million adult birds.Īt the time of Martha’s death, the depletion of so much abundance in such a short time was difficult for people to accept and explain. And it holds some important lessons today for a world where increasing numbers of species are becoming extinct. The rapidity with which this bird’s population went from billions to none was, I believe, unprecedented. Yet by 1890, there were probably no more than several thousand of the pigeons left, and the last wild bird was shot on Apin Laurel, Indiana. Other accounts, written over the course of three centuries and in several languages, testify to the birds darkening the sky for hours at a time over the major cities of the eastern third of the United States and Canada.Īt Fort Mississauga, Ontario (located at Niagara on the Lake, about 80 miles from Toronto) in early May of around 1860, Ross King, a major in the British army, witnessed and described in great detail a movement of passenger pigeons that has been calculated at more than two billion birds and, depending on how fast they were flying, could have been as many as 3.7 billion. John James Audubon, America’s best-known student of birds, recorded a flight of passenger pigeons along the Ohio River in Kentucky that eclipsed the sun for three days. These birds had a propensity for forming huge aggregations that are difficult to imagine today. SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTIONĪs late as the 1860s, passenger pigeons had likely numbered in the billions, and their population was neither evenly distributed across the landscape nor in any way subtle. Today, though, the mint julep is mostly associated with the Kentucky Derby, a horse race held yearly at Churchill Downs. Nobody knows exactly who came up with this cocktail, but it’s strongly associated with the American South, and was especially popular in Virginia in the early days. The earliest known mention of the mint julep traces to 1770. It’s also usually garnished with a slice of lemon and a fresh sprig of mint, which is where we got the inspiration to use lemon juice and orange juice in our mint julep iced tea recipe. Traditionally, this cocktail is served in a silver or pewter cup, though standard glasses are more common in most bars. These ingredients are “muddled” together with a special crushing tool to release the essential oils of the mint, which helps provide the refreshing flavor the mint julep is known for. But each only features a handful of abilities to invest in right now, and since they’re gated at five level intervals, the choices you have upon levelling up are usually pretty limited.Ī sniper with lightning powers? Sure. Each has two main skill trees with a different focus – the Sharpshooter has one focusing on direct ranged damage and one focusing on summonable creatures, while the Railmaster has one focused on melee combat and one focused on making his train bigger and nastier. The options for customizing these classes are a little bit lackluster, too, especially compared to some other recent ARPGs. There is an unlockable reload skill that refills your ammo instantly, and while it suits the fantasy the sharpshooter is trying to represent, it was far too rare that it let me feel like I was making interesting resource management decisions. That sounds great, but their ammo resource gauge is basically just a fancy stamina bar that recharges quickly when not in use. The Sharpshooter, for instance, is a savvy hunter who can summon various companions and has a whole toolbelt of powerful ranged attacks. The hilariously over-the-top Railmaster reimagines the concept of a pet class by summoning a battle train that follows you around on rails you leave behind as you move, to which more cars with different uses can be added by investing in the skill tree.Įach of the four playable classes has a very distinct and flavorful aesthetic and identity. Not all of them are quite as fun in practice as they seem in concept, though. The weird and eerie Dusk Mage builds up dark mana by using light spells and light mana by using dark spells, and can unleash a more powerful finisher of either type once the appropriate mana gauge is filled. Each of the four playable classes has a very distinct and flavorful aesthetic and identity. Finally, Ramming Robot offers further mobility and helps the Forged escape enemies quickly. At least things get a little more interesting when it comes to the class design. Poison Dart can provide an extra method of dealing damage, and Fracking Strike should be built up over time as a more effective Vent skill than Vortex Bomb for boss encounters. Power Projection and Sonic Pulse weaken enemies for a defensive boost. Typically, the support skills will provide defense and mobility and enhance the effectiveness of active skills. Players will also want to invest in several support skills with this build. ![]() Finally, Dance of Death allows the Forged to take on more elite enemies or larger groups. Vortex Bomb will be the primary Vent skill, and players should set it off once Cyclone Mode has placed them in the fray. Cyclone Mode will allow the Forged to position themselves within a group of enemies, and Drain provides a source of powerful AOE burst damage to those enemies. Drain is enhanced by Cyclone Mode, which is the primary damage skill. The key to the build is Drain, so players should invest in maximizing this skill. Social media content is shown at relatively small sizes, so it needs both fonts to be quite clear, but you can still look for a bold, more stylish font for the display text and something nice and crisp for the body. For example, CVs need heavy headers and clean body text, while flyers and posters for events can work well when they have quirky or funky display text to get grab attention paired with a much cleaner body text for contrast and legibility of the important details. You also need to establish a clear hierarchy in your font pairings: what will be the purpose of each one? Which will be for display and which for body text. For example, if you have a really unique display face full of personality, you'll need something more neutral to do the hard work and create a balance. It's important to balance personalities in font pairings too. Our mind ends up confused – is this a different font or not? Good contrast is often provided by pairing a serif font with a sans-serif font. For example, overly similar serifs or similar sans serifs don't tend to look nice next to each other. If typefaces are too similar, it's likely that they'll conflict. Contrasting fonts can be hard to find as you're effectively searching for two fonts that are different but also complement each other rather than causing conflict. |
